Grease a standard cake pan with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.

In a large mixing bowl, beat softened butter with sugar until pale and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.

Add eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition.

Mix in vanilla extract until evenly distributed.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with milk. Start and finish with the dry mix, blending until just combined. Do not overmix.

Pour batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top for even baking.

Bake in the center of the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre emerges clean.
