Peel onions and slice them into 12 mm thick rings. Separate the rings and layer them evenly in the prepared baking dish.

Sprinkle garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper evenly over the onion layers. Dot the surface with small pieces of butter.

Distribute shredded cheese evenly over the onions. Optionally, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top for additional flavor.

Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.

Remove foil and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly, golden, and onions are tender.
